AFRICAN PERCUSSION CLASS/WORKSHOP

Students will be engaged in the study of music utilizing traditional African percussion. Students will practice the concepts of rhythm, posture, technique, polyrhythm, arrangement, and orchestration. Students will study the history and cultures of African percussion instruments. The maintenance and care of instruments, including the tuning of drums will be taught. Advanced students will practice reading and writing drum music. Traditional African music is very connected to many dances and songs. Songs and basic dance steps may be taught to give a larger musical and cultural understanding. Each session would be 30 to 45 minutes for primary grades and 45 to 60 minutes for 5th grade and up. It is available as a one-time workshop, or as a series to occur over several weeks. INSTRUMENTS MAY BE PROVIDED BY THE INSTRUCTOR : conga, djembe, dunun and kutiro drums, bells, shekere and maraca gourd rattles.
